A cultural misunderstanding – here in 'Merica, the french fry is like the piece pipe. It is very common to grab one or two from a total stranger as a way of saying “hey you seem pretty cool and appear to observe societally accepted hygiene etiquette.”
To do otherwise in some cases is an insult. And to refuse to offer the french (freedom) fry is unthinkable.

A homeless guy once asked my friends and I for some of our food in a Burger King in Baltimore. When he wouldn't take some of our now cold chips, I said 'so beggers can be choosers'.
It was the greatest moment of my life.
